Administrative responsibilities will include the development of the virtual Geropsychiatry consultative services for the VISN medical facilities and collaborating in the further development of the Geriatric Tele-Mental Health program.
Clinical responsibilities will include consultative services and/or ongoing psychiatric care for the VA geriatric population in both psychiatric and primary care settings.
Care of Veterans will be provided remotely through video modalities such as Clinical Video Telehealth (where the veteran is seated at a VA site) and VA Video Connect (where the veteran is seated outside of the VA, typically in their home).
VA sites where the patient is located could include residential care (VA Community Living Center), inpatient settings, or outpatient clinics.
The incumbent will function independently to assume the role of primary psychiatric provider, team provider, or consultant depending on the patient-side needs.
The Geriatric Psychiatrist may conduct psychiatric evaluations, develop treatment plans, implement treatment or recommendations, and provide clinical management for a variety of complex mental health conditions, including, but not limited to:
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), substance abuse, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and other related conditions.
Treatment planning focuses on utilization of pharmacological, psychotherapeutic and technological interventions as well as appropriate referral for additional studies and/or for adjunctive psychosocial interventions.
The anticipated patient population will primarily be geriatric, but when needed by the patient-side sites, the incumbent may also be expected to provide care to a non-geriatric patient population.
The Geriatric Psychiatrist will also provide consultation to Veterans' families/caregivers as well as Licensed Independent Practitioners (LIP) and other professional staff on the assessment, education, and treatment of Veterans with complex clinical problems, particularly geriatric mental health issues.
The position requires a working knowledge of advanced psychopharmacology, geriatric psychiatry, psychotherapy and telehealth technologies.
Additional duties include but are not limited to:
remaining abreast of and engaged in all clinical Mental Health policies and procedures at the National, VISN and Local level, as well as completing VA mandated training and electronic medical record documentation in a timely manner.

Part-Time, 20 hours per week; Standard daytime hours in Eastern Standard Time.

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Residency Training:
Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
(NOTE:
VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.
) Approved residencies are:
(1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.
e.
, not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis.
PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
